“Highly favored”

Young and innocent Mary was greeted by a heavenly messenger with these words. Yet, “highly favored” took the form of rejection, desolation, instability, grief, and anguish.

Joseph, at the age of seventeen, was sold by his jealous siblings into slavery. The next thirteen years were a rollercoaster ride of events that no doubt left Joseph confused and feeling abandoned. Yet, when we view the whole story in retrospect, we see a young man who was highly favored; chosen for a unique role and purpose that took decades to unfold and decades for him to understand.

Daniel was a youth yanked from his home, family, culture, religion, language, and even manhood. He was put in a supremely challenging set of circumstances. Yet, he was given favor with his immediate prison keeper and ultimately with multiple world leaders in his lifetime. He was highly favored. Highly favored meant estrangement, loneliness, a night among lions, turbulent times of various world leaders that were in God’s Divine hand of Providence.

God truly daily loads each of His own with benefits. He lavishes blessings on all of His children. But there is a much smaller group of His own who are chosen to be “favored”. They are those chosen in the “furnace of affliction “. To be favored is to be in the minority of believers that face long-term, Father-filtered suffering, persecution, loss, or trouble. It is those few who have done “everything right”, but find themselves in lifetime suffering scenarios, multilayered trials, or unmerited persecution.

We all desire the blessings of the Lord, but to be favored is maybe a little less desirable. However, to be favored is to see God’s weaving His big-picture redemption story using the humblest of us taking part in the ongoing saga of Redemption. To be favored is to be poised to see God as few see Him. It is to learn of Him in ways that few know Him. It is to let go of the temporal and discover the beauty and awesome wonder of the eternal.

“Highly favored” requires a heart response of surrender. Just because one is found to be favored, doesn’t automatically mean they will reap the awesome fruit of such a calling. It requires a heart response like that of Mary—one of surrender. Likewise, it is required that there be inward integrity, like that of Daniel, that he would not be changed inwardly as he was immersed outwardly in a pagan world. There must be an attitude of faithfulness as seen in Joseph as wave after wave of out-of-control circumstances hit him, yet he remained faithful to the God of His youth; the God Who had revealed a dream to him yet delayed by thirty years to fulfill it.

I am favored. I have been chosen for the furnace of affliction. I choose to surrender. I choose to maintain my integrity. I choose to be faithful to the One Who keeps me, all the while, afflicting me. I choose to embrace favor.

“Altamente favorecida”

La joven e inocente María fue saludada por un mensajero celestial con estas palabras. Sin embargo, estar “altamente favorecida” tomó la forma de rechazo, desolación, inestabilidad, dolor y angustia.

José, a la edad de diecisiete años, fue vendido como esclavo por sus hermanos celosos. Los siguientes trece años fueron una montaña rusa de acontecimientos que, sin duda, dejaron a José confundido y sintiéndose abandonado. Pero, cuando vemos la historia completa en retrospectiva, vemos a un joven que fue altamente favorecido; escogido para un papel y un propósito únicos que tardaron décadas en desarrollarse y décadas en comprender.

Daniel era un muchacho arrancado de su hogar, su familia, su cultura, su religión, su idioma y hasta de su propia identidad como hombre. Fue puesto en un conjunto de circunstancias extremadamente difíciles. Sin embargo, recibió favor del guardia que estaba directamente a cargo de él y, con el tiempo, de múltiples líderes mundiales durante su vida. Él fue altamente favorecido. Ser altamente favorecido significó separación, soledad, una noche entre leones, tiempos turbulentos bajo diversos gobernantes mundiales que estaban en la mano divina de la Providencia.

Dios verdaderamente carga cada día a los suyos con beneficios. Él derrama bendiciones sobre todos Sus hijos. Pero hay un grupo mucho más pequeño de los Suyos que son escogidos para ser “favorecidos”. Son aquellos elegidos en el “horno de la aflicción”. Ser favorecido es pertenecer a la minoría de creyentes que enfrentan sufrimientos a largo plazo filtrados por el Padre, persecución, pérdidas o aflicciones. Son esos pocos que han hecho “todo bien”, pero se encuentran en escenarios de sufrimiento de por vida, pruebas múltiples o persecuciones inmerecidas.

Todos deseamos las bendiciones del Señor, pero ser favorecido quizá sea un poco menos deseable. Sin embargo, ser favorecido es ver cómo Dios teje Su historia redentora a gran escala usando a los más humildes de nosotros para participar en la saga continua de la Redención. Ser favorecido es estar en posición de ver a Dios como pocos lo ven. Es aprender de Él de maneras que pocos lo conocen. Es soltar lo temporal y descubrir la belleza y el asombro eterno.

Ser “altamente favorecido” requiere una respuesta del corazón en rendición. El hecho de ser encontrado favorecido no significa automáticamente que uno cosechará el fruto maravilloso de tal llamado. Requiere una actitud del corazón como la de María: una actitud de entrega. Asimismo, se requiere integridad interna, como la de Daniel, quien no permitió que su interior fuera cambiado aunque estaba inmerso exteriormente en un mundo pagano. Debe haber una actitud de fidelidad como la que se ve en José, quien, ola tras ola de circunstancias fuera de su control, permaneció fiel al Dios de su juventud; al Dios que le había revelado un sueño y que tardó treinta años en cumplirlo.

Yo soy favorecida. He sido escogida para el horno de la aflicción. Elijo rendirme. Elijo mantener mi integridad. Elijo ser fiel a Aquel que me sostiene y, al mismo tiempo, me aflige. Elijo abrazar el favor.
