Making God His favorite “Chocolate chip Cookies”
Chocolate Chip cookies were my husband’s favorite cookies. Early in my marriage I longed to make a “perfect” cookie for him. He had an ideal cookie, and my family recipe didn’t pass the test. So, I began a quest to find the perfect chocolate chip cookie recipe; one that had the right balance of sweet and buttery, soft and slightly chewy, not too sweet, with the perfect ratio of chocolate chips. I tried nine recipes before on the tenth try, I found it! It brought me so much pleasure to see my husband enjoy the pleasure of the “perfect” chocolate chip cookie. Sometimes I long to be able to do that for my God. My Jehovah Who cares for me, provides for me, comforts and defends me. I long to please Him.
I am keenly aware that there is absolutely nothing I can do to earn God’s favor. He pours His favor out in abundance over me because I am His daughter. There’s nothing I do to earn that pleasure, and there is nothing I can do to lose that favor. It is such a beautiful reality of every believer, regardless if they’re living according to God’s desires or not. He chooses every believer because we chose Him.
Psalm 149:4 “For the Lord taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation.”
It is such a peaceful truth, especially when I fail Him.
Still, I could not reconcile so many other passages that talk about specific things that please Jehovah:
- Children who obey their parents:
Colossians 3:20
“Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.”
- Prayer of many kinds that are made for others:
1 Timothy 2:1-3
“I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;”
- Suffering for Christ AND the sacrifice of praise (praising when it costs something —when it hurts), the sacrifice of doing good and the sacrifice of a lifestyle that reflects glory to Christ:
Hebrews 13:13-16
“Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach. For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come. By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name. But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.”
- Surrender to His Supernatural work and maturing process in your life:
Hebrews 13:20-21
“Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.”
- Living by faith, not fear:
Hebrews 11:6
“But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”
- Fearing (having deep respect & awe) Him:
Psalm 147:11
“The Lord taketh pleasure in them that fear him, in those that hope in his mercy.”
- Living and operating in the Spirit:
Romans 8:6-8
“For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.”
- Giving, ministering, and caring for others:
Philippians 4:15-18
“Now ye Philippians know also, that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church communicated with me as concerning giving and receiving, but ye only. For even in Thessalonica ye sent once and again unto my necessity. Not because I desire a gift: but I desire fruit that may abound to your account. But I have all, and abound: I am full, having received of Epaphroditus the things which were sent from you, an odour of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, wellpleasing to God.”
How do these co-exist? How are we lavished with unmerited favor, new mercies every morning (Lam 3:22-23), abundant love and grace; yet still there are definite things Scripture reveals please Him? If He is already pleased, why would anything else be needful?
I wrestled with it a long time.
Then it came to me…
I look at the faces of my five children—my fabulous five—and I am so pleased. Just because they are mine, I am pleased. I smile when I think of them. My love for them runs deeper than any “crime” they might commit. However, when I come home and find the house cleaned up, dishes done, a candle burning so it smells welcoming…I feel loved…my daughter served me and poured out love. When I am weary from a long day and a son pulls up a chair and gives me a neck and scalp massage, I feel deeply loved. When other sons have flowers for me, send me a card in the mail from college “just because”, I feel so loved!
That’s what I believe is the truth that marries both perspectives of our marvelous Creator and Redeemer. Yes, He is pleased every day you are His. He chose you. He accepted you. He bought you. He adopted you. He sealed you with the Holy Spirit, and He is crazy in love with you! (Ephesians 1)
But when we choose Him back from our heart full of love and gratitude to do that which Scripture defines as pleasing unto Him, we are pouring back our love to Him and that makes Him feel loved by us…a different, but special kind of pleasure. We can freely give back what we’ve been given, without limit.
So, in the challenges of life, the troubled relationships, the busyness of opportunity, the pressures and demands of living by faith, fearing God, being disciplined in prayer…look at it all through the lens of opportunity. Opportunity to show God how much you love Him; to pour out gratitude to Jesus Who redeemed you; to allow the Spirit free course in and through you…all of which will please—make God feel deeply loved. It’s like serving Him His favorite plate of chocolate chip cookies!
Our heart motives matter. We can do the exact same acts of service, one from a heart of duty and drudge or the other from a heart of praise, surrender, and love. God feels the pleasure of our reflected-back love when the heart from which we give, serve, and live is a heart of love, gratitude, and surrender. “Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:” 1 Timothy 1:5

Haciéndole sus “galletitas” favoritas a Dios
Las galletas con chispas de chocolate eran las favoritas de mi esposo. Al inicio de nuestro matrimonio, yo deseaba con todo mi corazón hacerle la galleta “perfecta”. Él tenía en mente una galleta ideal, y la receta de mi familia no pasaba la prueba. Así que inicié una búsqueda para encontrar la receta perfecta: aquella que tuviera el equilibrio ideal de dulce y mantequilloso, suave y ligeramente masticable, no demasiado dulce, con la proporción exacta de chispas de chocolate. Probé nueve recetas antes de encontrar, en el intento número diez, la adecuada. Me dio tanto gusto ver a mi esposo disfrutar del placer de una galleta “perfecta” con chispas de chocolate. A veces, anhelo poder hacer eso para mi Dios. Mi Jehová, quien me cuida, me provee, me consuela y me defiende. Anhelo agradarle.
Tengo muy claro que no hay absolutamente nada que yo pueda hacer para ganarme el favor de Dios. Él derrama su favor abundantemente sobre mí porque soy Su hija. No hay nada que yo haga para obtener ese favor, y tampoco hay nada que haga para perderlo. Es una realidad preciosa para cada creyente, sin importar si está viviendo o no conforme a los deseos de Dios. Él nos escoge porque nosotros lo escogimos a Él.
Salmos 149:4
“Porque Jehová tiene contentamiento en su pueblo; hermoseará a los humildes con la salvación.”
Esa es una verdad que trae mucha paz, especialmente cuando le fallo.
Aun así, no lograba reconciliarme con tantos otros pasajes que hablan de cosas específicas que agradan a Jehová:
• Los hijos que obedecen a sus padres:
Colosenses 3:20
“Hijos, obedeced a vuestros padres en todo, porque esto agrada al Señor.”
• Oraciones de muchos tipos hechas por otros:
1 Timoteo 2:1-3
“Exhorto ante todo, a que se hagan rogativas, oraciones, peticiones y acciones de gracias, por todos los hombres; por los reyes y por todos los que están en eminencia, para que vivamos quieta y reposadamente en toda piedad y honestidad. Porque esto es bueno y agradable delante de Dios nuestro Salvador.”
• Sufrir por Cristo Y el sacrificio de alabanza (alabar cuando cuesta—cuando duele), hacer el bien y vivir una vida que refleje la gloria de Cristo:
Hebreos 13:13-16
“Salgamos, pues, a él, fuera del campamento, llevando su vituperio. Porque no tenemos aquí ciudad permanente, sino que buscamos la por venir. Así que, ofrezcamos siempre a Dios, por medio de él, sacrificio de alabanza, es decir, fruto de labios que confiesan su nombre. Y de hacer bien y de la ayuda mutua no os olvidéis; porque de tales sacrificios se agrada Dios.”
• Rendirse a Su obra sobrenatural y al proceso de maduración en nuestras vidas:
Hebreos 13:20-21
“Y el Dios de paz que resucitó de los muertos a nuestro Señor Jesucristo, el gran pastor de las ovejas, por la sangre del pacto eterno, os haga aptos en toda obra buena para que hagáis su voluntad, haciendo él en vosotros lo que es agradable delante de él por Jesucristo; al cual sea la gloria por los siglos de los siglos. Amén.”
• Vivir por fe, no por miedo:
Hebreos 11:6
“Pero sin fe es imposible agradar a Dios; porque es necesario que el que se acerca a Dios crea que le hay, y que es galardonador de los que le buscan.”
• Temerle (tener un profundo respeto y reverencia):
Salmos 147:11
“Se complace Jehová en los que le temen, y en los que esperan en su misericordia.”
• Vivir y andar en el Espíritu:
Romanos 8:6-8
“Porque el ocuparse de la carne es muerte, pero el ocuparse del Espíritu es vida y paz. Por cuanto los designios de la carne son enemistad contra Dios; porque no se sujetan a la ley de Dios, ni tampoco pueden; y los que viven según la carne no pueden agradar a Dios.”
• Dar, ministrar y cuidar a otros:
Filipenses 4:15-18
“Y sabéis también vosotros, oh filipenses, que al principio de la predicación del evangelio, cuando partí de Macedonia, ninguna iglesia participó conmigo en razón de dar y recibir, sino vosotros solos; pues aun a Tesalónica me enviasteis una y otra vez para mis necesidades. No es que busque dádivas, sino que busco fruto que abunde en vuestra cuenta. Pero todo lo he recibido, y tengo abundancia; estoy lleno, habiendo recibido de Epafrodito lo que enviasteis; olor fragante, sacrificio acepto, agradable a Dios.”
¿Cómo pueden coexistir estas verdades? ¿Cómo es que recibimos favor inmerecido, nuevas misericordias cada mañana (Lamentaciones 3:22-23), amor abundante y gracia; y aún así hay cosas específicas que agradan a Dios? Si ya está complacido, ¿por qué sería necesario algo más?
Luché con esto por mucho tiempo.
Hasta que lo entendí…
Miro los rostros de mis cinco hijos—mis cinco fabulosos—y me siento tan complacida. Simplemente porque son míos, me complace verlos. Sonrío al pensar en ellos. Mi amor por ellos va más allá de cualquier “delito” que pudieran cometer. Pero, cuando llego a casa y encuentro todo limpio, los platos lavados, una vela encendida que da un aroma acogedor… me siento amada… mi hija me sirvió y me expresó amor. Cuando estoy cansada después de un día largo y uno de mis hijos se sienta a mi lado y me da un masaje en el cuello y la cabeza, me siento profundamente amada. Cuando otros me traen flores, me mandan una tarjeta desde la universidad “solo porque sí”, me siento tan amada.
Eso es, creo yo, lo que une ambas perspectivas de nuestro maravilloso Creador y Redentor. Sí, Él se complace cada día porque tú eres Suyo. Te escogió. Te aceptó. Te compró. Te adoptó. Te selló con el Espíritu Santo, ¡y está locamente enamorado de ti! (Efesios 1)
Pero cuando tú lo escoges a Él de vuelta, con un corazón lleno de amor y gratitud, haciendo lo que la Escritura dice que le agrada, estás devolviéndole tu amor, y eso lo hace sentirse amado por ti… un tipo de placer distinto, pero muy especial. Podemos dar libremente lo que hemos recibido, sin medida.
Así que, en medio de los desafíos de la vida, las relaciones complicadas, el ajetreo de las oportunidades, las presiones y demandas de vivir por fe, temer a Dios, y ser disciplinados en la oración… míralo todo a través del lente de la oportunidad. Oportunidad para mostrarle a Dios cuánto lo amas; para derramar gratitud a Jesús, quien te redimió; para permitir que el Espíritu fluya libremente en ti y a través de ti… todo eso agradará a Dios—lo hará sentirse profundamente amado. ¡Es como servirle Su plato favorito de galletas con chispas de chocolate!
Nuestras motivaciones importan. Podemos hacer exactamente los mismos actos de servicio, unos desde un corazón de obligación y rutina, y otros desde un corazón de alabanza, entrega y amor. Dios siente el placer de nuestro amor reflejado cuando el corazón desde el que damos, servimos y vivimos es un corazón lleno de amor, gratitud y rendición.
1 Timoteo 1:5
“Pues el propósito de este mandamiento es el amor nacido de corazón limpio, y de buena conciencia, y de fe no fingida.”
