Psalm 143: When God seems distant or silent
There is inner struggle; a heaviness on your shoulder. You are longing for God to do something amazing…yet there is a sense of disappointment… it seems God doesn’t hear??…Doesn’t care? …Isn’t aware?? These questions plague you. The tug-of-war in your mind knowing you can trust God, but wondering why He isn’t always showing Himself trustworthy as He leaves you suspended between what you know and what you do not know…and then there are all the questions…
Psalm 143 is a rich passage to express these struggles. This is a Psalm that can be made your own prayer to God.
“Hear my prayer, O Lord, give ear to my supplications: in thy faithfulness answer me, and in thy righteousness. And enter not into judgment with thy servant: for in thy sight shall no man living be justified. For the enemy hath persecuted my soul; he hath smitten my life down to the ground; he hath made me to dwell in darkness, as those that have been long dead. Therefore is my spirit overwhelmed within me; my heart within me is desolate.”
We can resonate with David’s wrestling: the enemy of grief, discouragement, disappointment, doubt, and isolation that have been badgering. Sometimes our spirit is overwhelmed inside. The heart feels desolate, cheated, and betrayed—while you trust God completely; and you know He hears you, this season that was supposed to be one of God’s faithfulness shining through, His presence abundant, but it feels like your heart cries fall to the ground…and it hurts, deeply.
“I remember the days of old; I meditate on all thy works; I muse on the work of thy hands. I stretch forth my hands unto thee: my soul thirsteth after thee, as a thirsty land. Selah.”
You remember how God has come through for you…you count your blessings…but it’s not enough—you stretch out your hands to your Abba again…you are SO thirsty to hear His voice…but He leaves you in the Selah: that place of sitting in a hard place, waiting, longing, grieving. It is a place you should rest, but there’s so much unrest in your soul—you keep reaching out, crying out, but …nothing.
“Hear me speedily, O Lord: my spirit faileth: hide not thy face from me, lest I be like unto them that go down into the pit. “
David gets it. It’s a hard place to be. David was in the place of feeling like the grave was the only solution. He’s crying out to God to hurry it up, it was so bad.
So, what do you do with these thoughts, feelings, and emotions?
“Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee. Deliver me, O Lord, from mine enemies: I flee unto thee to hide me. Teach me to do thy will; for thou art my God: thy spirit is good; lead me into the land of uprightness. Quicken me, O Lord, for thy name’s sake: for thy righteousness’ sake bring my soul out of trouble. And of thy mercy cut off mine enemies, and destroy all them that afflict my soul: for I am thy servant.”
Notice all the imperatives? See how he stated the Truth to himself, even in the place of deep confusion, conflict of soul, and desperation?
- Look for, ask for, and be aware of His lovingkindness, especially first thing in the morning. When the heaviness begins to creep in upon waking, intentionally focus on the excessive amounts of lovingkindnesses surrounding you: freedom, safety, health, material benefits, loving home, ears to hear birdsong, eyes to see the beauty outside your window in the micro and macro, smell to inhale fresh air…
- Ask for deliverance for the enemies that are plaguing you: grief, discouragement, disappointment, doubt, and isolation
- Ask Him to cause you to know the way you should walk; to do His will; to lead you. Ask Him to teach you in this season.
- Ask Him to quicken you—I love that word—quicken—to make you alive, not just living, but thriving–reviving. It’s asking Him to help you thrive—for His name’s sake…because of His character, for the sake of His faithfulness, because of His righteous disposition. Remind Him of His character…claim what He says He is and Who He is to be faithful in your story.
- Remind Him you are His servant. It’s ok to ask Him to destroy these enemies, because He is merciful.
- Ask Him to answer you in a way you can recognize and relate.
Don’t give up.
This is only a season of “night”.
Joy is coming.
There is HOPE.

Salmo 143: Cuando Dios parece distante o en silencio
Hay una lucha interna; una carga pesada sobre tus hombros. Anhelas que Dios haga algo asombroso… pero hay un sentimiento de decepción… ¿Parece que Dios no escucha? ¿No le importa? ¿No está al tanto? Estas preguntas te atormentan. Hay una lucha mental: sabes que puedes confiar en Dios, pero te preguntas por qué no siempre se muestra confiable, dejándote suspendido entre lo que sabes y lo que no sabes… y entonces vienen todas las preguntas…
El Salmo 143 es un pasaje profundo que expresa esta clase de luchas. Es un salmo que puedes hacer tu propia oración a Dios:
“Oh Jehová, oye mi oración, escucha mis ruegos; respóndeme por tu verdad, por tu justicia. Y no entres en juicio con tu siervo; porque no se justificará delante de ti ningún ser humano. Porque ha perseguido el enemigo mi alma; ha postrado en tierra mi vida; me ha hecho habitar en tinieblas como los ya muertos. Y mi espíritu se angustió dentro de mí; está desolado mi corazón.” —Salmo 143:1–4
Podemos identificarnos con la lucha de David: el enemigo del duelo, el desánimo, la decepción, la duda y la soledad que te acosan sin tregua. A veces, tu espíritu se siente abrumado por dentro. El corazón se siente desolado, engañado y traicionado—aunque confías en Dios completamente, aunque sabes que Él te escucha, esta temporada, que se suponía sería una de fidelidad evidente y presencia abundante, se siente como si tus ruegos cayeran al suelo… y duele, profundamente.
“Me acordé de los días antiguos; meditaba en todas tus obras; reflexionaba en las obras de tus manos. Extendí mis manos a ti, mi alma a ti como la tierra sedienta. Selah.” —Salmo 143:5–6
Recuerdas cómo Dios ha actuado antes en tu vida… cuentas tus bendiciones… pero no basta—extiendes tus manos a tu Abba nuevamente… estás tan sediento de oír Su voz… pero Él te deja en el Selah: ese espacio de espera en medio del dolor, anhelando, llorando. Es un lugar donde deberías descansar, pero hay tanto desasosiego en tu alma—sigues clamando, alcanzando, pero… silencio.
“Respóndeme pronto, oh Jehová, porque desmaya mi espíritu; no escondas de mí tu rostro, no venga yo a ser semejante a los que descienden a la sepultura.”
—Salmo 143:7
David lo entiende. Es un lugar difícil. David se sintió como si la muerte fuera la única salida. Le ruega a Dios que actúe rápido, porque la situación era desesperante.
Entonces, ¿qué haces con estos pensamientos, emociones y sentimientos?
“Hazme oír por la mañana tu misericordia, porque en ti he confiado; hazme saber el camino por donde ande, porque a ti he elevado mi alma. Líbrame de mis enemigos, oh Jehová; en ti me refugio. Enséñame a hacer tu voluntad, porque tú eres mi Dios; tu buen espíritu me guíe a tierra de rectitud. Por tu nombre, oh Jehová, me vivificarás; por tu justicia sacarás mi alma de angustia. Y por tu misericordia disiparás a mis enemigos, y destruirás a todos los adversarios de mi alma, porque yo soy tu siervo.” —Salmo 143:8–12
¿Notas todos los imperativos? ¿Ves cómo David se recuerda la Verdad, incluso en medio de la confusión, el conflicto interno y la desesperación?
Pasos que puedes tomar:
- Busca, pide y mantente consciente de Su misericordia, especialmente en la mañana. Cuando el peso comienza a colarse apenas abres los ojos, enfócate intencionalmente en las muchas misericordias que te rodean: libertad, seguridad, salud, un hogar, oídos para escuchar el canto de los pájaros, ojos para ver la belleza, olfato para oler el aire fresco…
- Pide liberación de los enemigos que te acosan: duelo, desánimo, decepción, duda y soledad.
- Pídele que te muestre el camino que debes seguir; que te enseñe a hacer Su voluntad; que te guíe. Pídele que te enseñe en esta temporada.
- Pídele que te vivifique — me encanta esa palabra — vivificar: darte vida, no solo existir, sino florecer. Es pedirle que te haga prosperar… por amor a Su nombre… por Su carácter, por Su fidelidad. Recuérdale quién es Él… reclama lo que Él dice que es y lo que promete ser para ti.
- Recuérdale que eres Su siervo. Está bien pedirle que destruya a tus enemigos internos, porque Él es misericordioso.
- Pídele que te responda de una forma que puedas reconocer y entender. Él sabe cómo hablarte.
No te rindas.
Esto es solo una temporada de “noche”.
El gozo viene.
Hay ESPERANZA.
