When your Life Lies Shattered at Your Feet
Jesus sat in the privacy and intimacy of the Upper Room the very night He was to be arrested. He knelt and washed the feet of the ones who, within hours, would be betray Him, deny Him three times, fall asleep when He desperately needed a friend, forsake Him, and abandon all they were focused on in that moment. He knew. He knew the life-shattering and life-altering events that were coming. He knew. He knew the suffering and the persecution that was coming in the not-too-distant horizon. He knew. He knew the grief and despair these precious friends and followers were facing, while as yet, they were unaware.
It was in that understanding that Jesus gave some of the most edifying words of Scripture. He gave six absolute statements for His followers to recall in all the many tomorrows they would face without Him.
These six statements are a lifeline across the millennia for anyone facing or enduring life-altering circumstances. It may be you have learned of the betrayal of a spouse or child. Perhaps it is the death of a dear loved one. It could be someone having faced or facing a real trauma, be that physical, emotional, spiritual, or mental. It can be in the words of a doctor who has stated it is “hopeless”; “we’ve run out of options”.
Jesus’ statements to anchor to in life-shattering events and circumstances:
Statement one: “I will come again…I will receive you to myself.” (John 14:3 & 28)
This brings so much comfort because it is an absolute guarantee that it won’t always be this way. There will be an end to the pain and the struggle. This is not the end of the story. He IS coming back! He has every intention to right every wrong and heal every broken place. He is right now, preparing for this return, preparing for you! His absence is His evidence that He will fulfill His promise.
Statement two:
I AM…the Way (the road; the way of thinking, feeling, & deciding; course of conduct)
…the Truth (absolute right contrasting absolute wrong)
…the Life (absolute fullness of life, real and genuine)
…the Vine
These are the four characteristics, qualities, or definitions of Who He is…His name = His character. Jesus said of Himself when the events of life leave you in confusion and despair you will need: the WAY, the TRUTH, and the LIFE. When life crumbles before you, these are the four qualities you need most.
- When you don’t know where to turn or whom to ask, He is the WAY.
- When you don’t know the answer, when you don’t know what to do, if you sit facing betrayal, He is the TRUTH.
- When life seems finished. When persecution grasps, when the casket closes and the dreams lie in ashes on the floor, He is the LIFE that you crave in the face of death.
The answers we need, the Hope we are reaching for, the anchor to hold us in the swell is found in Jesus, the WAY, the TRUTH, the LIFE.
He is the VINE. (John 15:1) In the face of the most cruel and desperate places we may find ourselves, He extends an invitation…ABIDE. In abiding, our world-view is shifted. We begin to see life, not as we see it now, but as HE sees it. Abiding in His love (John 15:9). Abiding in His presence. The proportion to that which we abide is the proportion that we begin to see His fruit in our responses, attitudes, and reactions. The more I truly abide, the more I begin to want what He wants, to pray for what He would pray, to care about what He cares.
Statement three: Ask anything according to His name – His nature – He will pray the Father and He will do it; give it to you. (John 14:13-14 & John 16:26)
The key to this powerful prayer promise is rooted in the very essence of His nature—the VINE. As we learn to abide in Him, we learn to want what He wants. We learn to see life through His perspective. We begin to see the fingerprints of God Almighty in our shattered circumstances, and our prayer requests begin to align to His big picture will. We begin to see shapes of how our loss, brokenness, betrayal, persecution, or suffering is, in reality, His mercy in disguise; His faithfulness to work all things together for our eventual good and for His ultimate glory. We see shadows of what we perceived was evil now being made for good.
Statement four: I will NOT leave you comfortless; I will give you another Comforter (John 14:16 & 18)
Jesus wanted anyone facing life-altering situations to be reminded that no matter what we feel…we are not alone. Jesus spent the bulk of His conversation introducing His closest companions and followers to their new Best Friend. The Holy Spirit, the Comforter, the Spirit of Truth, Who is our real-time, vibrant member of the Godhead alive and working inside every believer. In the most devastating places of life, focus on Who He is, His purpose, and learn the discipline of listening for His Voice. He indwells to guide us, intercede for us, to comfort us, to point us to the Truth, to teach us, to remind us, to convict us, to reveal God’s plan, purpose, and will, and to produce His fruit in our hearts and lives. Grow in relationship with the Spirit of the Lord.
Statement five: for the one who keeps Jesus’ Words and commandments: The Father & Jesus will come to that one; They will abide with that one; Jesus will come again; He will receive unto Himself (John 14:3, 21, 23, 28)
This is a statement of proximity. Jesus states clearly in proportion to my choices to live according to His Words, commandments, and wishes, He will, in turn, be RIGHT THERE with me! He will no doubt never leave nor forsake the works of His own hands, but there is a level of intimacy available that is manifested to how proactive I am to lay aside my selfishness, pride, and hurts; instead, to love with abandon; loving God with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength, as well as loving my neighbor as myself. Knowing God’s love, receiving His love, in turn, giving His love. That is where new levels of intimacy are discovered.
Statement six: Your sorrow WILL be turned to joy. I will see you again; your heart WILL rejoice. No one can take that joy from you. (John 16:20 & 22)
This is not the end of the story. Joy will come again. You will feel positive emotions again. That joy set before us is another anchor of hope when everything FEELS so wrong. Jesus invites us to journey with Him deeper, richer, and fuller than before as we navigate the Father-filtered trials and even consequences from other’s failures or sin. Jesus was planting Truth into the hearts of His closest followers that night. He was giving the anchors they would need for the rest of their lifetimes, that mostly ended in persecution, desperation and with martyr’s deaths. His Words echo across the pages of Scripture and speak into our very hard places in life. “Let not your heart be troubled”. It is a choice. There is much more at stake in your life narrative than you can imagine. Stay faithful. Look to Jesus and the beautiful statements He gave to hold us when we can no longer hold on.

Jesús estaba sentado en la privacidad e intimidad del Aposento Alto, la misma noche en que sería arrestado. Primera declaración: “Vendré otra vez… y os tomaré a mí mismo”
Juan 14:3, 28
“Y si me fuere y os preparare lugar, vendré otra vez, y os tomaré a mí mismo, para que donde yo estoy, vosotros también estéis… Habéis oído que yo os he dicho: Voy, y vengo a vosotros…”
Esto trae un consuelo inmenso, porque es una garantía absoluta de que no siempre será así. Habrá un fin para el dolor y la lucha. Esta no es la última página de la historia. ¡Él va a regresar! Tiene toda la intención de corregir cada injusticia y sanar cada herida. En este momento, está preparando ese regreso, ¡preparando un lugar para ti! Su ausencia es la evidencia de que cumplirá Su promesa.
Segunda declaración: YO SOY… el Camino, la Verdad, la Vida… la Vid
Juan 14:6; 15:1
“Jesús le dijo: Yo soy el camino, y la verdad, y la vida; nadie viene al Padre, sino por mí.”
“Yo soy la vid verdadera, y mi Padre es el labrador.”
Estos son los cuatro aspectos de quién es Él… Su nombre = Su carácter. Jesús dijo que, cuando la vida te deje en confusión y desesperación, necesitas: el CAMINO, la VERDAD y la VIDA. Cuando todo se derrumba, estas son las cualidades que más necesitas.
- Cuando no sabes a dónde acudir ni a quién preguntar, Él es el CAMINO.
- Cuando no sabes la respuesta, cuando no sabes qué hacer, cuando enfrentas la traición, Él es la VERDAD.
- Cuando la vida parece acabada, cuando la persecución oprime, cuando el ataúd se cierra y tus sueños yacen hechos cenizos, Él es la VIDA que anhelas frente a la muerte.
Él es la VID. En los lugares más crueles y desesperantes, Él extiende una invitación: PERMANECE. Al permanecer, nuestra visión del mundo cambia. Empezamos a ver la vida no como la vemos ahora, sino como Él la ve. Permanecer en Su amor (Juan 15:9). Permanecer en Su presencia. En la medida que permanecemos, empezamos a ver Su fruto en nuestras respuestas, actitudes y reacciones. Cuanto más permanezco en Él, más comienzo a desear lo que Él desea, a orar como Él oraría, a interesarme por lo que a Él le importa.
Tercera declaración: Pide cualquier cosa en Su nombre — según Su naturaleza — Él orará al Padre y lo hará
Juan 14:13-14; 16:26
“Y todo lo que pidiereis al Padre en mi nombre, lo haré, para que el Padre sea glorificado en el Hijo. Si algo pidiereis en mi nombre, yo lo haré.”
“En aquel día pediréis en mi nombre; y no os digo que yo rogaré al Padre por vosotros…”
La clave de esta poderosa promesa de oración está en la esencia misma de Su naturaleza — la VID. Al aprender a permanecer en Él, aprendemos a desear lo que Él desea. Empezamos a ver la vida desde Su perspectiva. Vemos las huellas de Dios en nuestras circunstancias rotas y nuestras oraciones comienzan a alinearse con Su voluntad. Lo que parecía pérdida, traición, persecución o sufrimiento, empieza a revelarse como Su misericordia disfrazada, Su fidelidad obrando todo para nuestro bien y Su gloria. Vemos cómo lo que parecía mal, ahora es usado para bien.
Cuarta declaración: No los dejaré huérfanos; les daré otro Consolador
Juan 14:16, 18
“Y yo rogaré al Padre, y os dará otro Consolador, para que esté con vosotros para siempre…”
“No os dejaré huérfanos; vendré a vosotros.”
Jesús quería que todos los que enfrentaran situaciones que cambian la vida recordaran que, sin importar cómo se sientan… no están solos. Dedicó gran parte de Su conversación a presentarles a su nuevo mejor Amigo: el Espíritu Santo, el Consolador, el Espíritu de Verdad, quien es parte activa y viva de la Trinidad, morando dentro de cada creyente. En los momentos más devastadores, enfócate en Quién es Él, cuál es Su propósito, y aprende la disciplina de escuchar Su voz. Él habita en nosotros para guiarnos, interceder, consolarnos, señalarnos la Verdad, enseñarnos, recordarnos, convencernos, revelar el plan de Dios, y producir Su fruto en nuestra vida. Crece en tu relación con el Espíritu del Señor.
Quinta declaración: Para el que guarda Sus mandamientos, el Padre y Jesús vendrán y morarán con él
Juan 14:3, 21, 23, 28
“El que tiene mis mandamientos, y los guarda, ése es el que me ama…”
“Y mi Padre le amará, y vendremos a él, y haremos morada con él.”
Esta es una declaración de proximidad. Jesús deja claro que en la medida en que yo elijo vivir conforme a Sus palabras y mandamientos, Él estará presente conmigo. Sin duda, Él no dejará ni desamparará la obra de Sus manos. Pero hay un nivel de intimidad disponible que se manifiesta según cuán proactivo soy en dejar mi egoísmo, orgullo y heridas. Amar con abandono, amar a Dios con todo mi corazón, alma, mente y fuerzas, y amar a mi prójimo como a mí mismo. Conocer el amor de Dios, recibirlo, y luego darlo. Ahí se descubren nuevos niveles de intimidad con Él.
Sexta declaración: Su tristeza se convertirá en gozo. Los veré otra vez y nadie les quitará ese gozo
Juan 16:20, 22
“De cierto, de cierto os digo, que vosotros lloraréis y lamentaréis… pero aunque vosotros estéis tristes, vuestra tristeza se convertirá en gozo.”
“También vosotros ahora tenéis tristeza; pero os volveré a ver, y se gozará vuestro corazón, y nadie os quitará vuestro gozo.”
Este no es el final de la historia. El gozo volverá. Sentirás emociones positivas otra vez. Ese gozo puesto delante de nosotros es otra ancla de esperanza cuando todo parece estar mal. Jesús nos invita a caminar con Él de una manera más profunda, rica y completa, incluso a través de pruebas filtradas por el Padre o consecuencias del pecado de otros.
Aquella noche, Jesús plantó verdades en el corazón de Sus discípulos más cercanos. Les dio anclas que necesitarían por el resto de sus vidas —vidas que, en su mayoría, terminarían en persecución, desesperación y muerte como mártires. Sus palabras resuenan a través de las Escrituras y nos hablan hoy en medio de nuestros lugares más difíciles: “No se turbe vuestro corazón” (Juan 14:1).
Es una elección. Hay mucho más en juego en la narrativa de tu vida de lo que puedes imaginar. Sé fiel. Mira a Jesús y a las hermosas declaraciones que Él nos dejó para sostenernos cuando ya no podemos sostenernos por nosotros mismos.
